Description
A top-down shooter roguelike by Vlambeer, ported to Switch in 2019. In a post-apocalyptic world, you push through randomly generated rooms blasting mutants to reach the fabled nuclear throne. Mutations, wild weapons and brutal difficulty forge an ultra-snappy, fiendishly addictive action loop.
Nuclear Throne review
Exemplary snappiness and readability: the character responds within a tenth of a second and every death is instantly understandable. Mutations and weapons combine with wild richness, and the recoil of your shots becomes a movement tool in itself.
The fun springs from raw snappiness: shoot, dodge, grab an absurd weapon and sweep everything away. Every run restarts in a second, and the sheer feel of shooting, crisp and satisfying, is enough to make you want to go again, over and over.
The addiction comes from the brevity of the runs and the promise of the next attempt: 'this time I'll get further.' Death is instant, so is the restart, and the sense of progressing a little each try creates an irresistible loop that swallows the hours.
The difficulty is ferocious and uncompromising: enemies hit hard, death comes in an instant, and the slightest misstep is paid for on the spot. This demand is the salt of the game, because every victory wrenched after dozens of failures delivers an immense, earned satisfaction.
