A roguelike gem, brutal, snappy and perfectly calibrated. The merciless difficulty will put off the faint of heart, but the immediate shooting joy and depth of mutations make it a drug for genre diehards.

Memorable bosses

The bosses appear at the end of already grueling biomes and forgive no sloppiness. Their difficulty is brutal but always fair: every death is explainable, and it's by learning their patterns that you eventually break through walls that seemed impassable.

Better with friends

Local co-op adds a layer of gleeful chaos: two mutants firing in every direction, reviving each other on the edge of death. The fearsome difficulty becomes a shared ordeal, where every failed run ends in a mix of groans and laughter.

Is Nuclear Throne still worth playing in 2026?

Years after release, Nuclear Throne remains an unsurpassed benchmark of the twin-stick roguelike, a model of snappiness and balance that many imitate without matching. Its brutal yet always fair difficulty and its loop of short runs make it a timeless pleasure. As the roguelike genre dominates the indie scene, returning to this classic stays illuminating. On Switch, its express runs restart in a second, perfect for grabbing a few tries anywhere.
